[Fall 2020 Studio Project]
Located on the shores of Jordan Lake (formerly known as New Hope Lake) near Durham, North Carolina, The New Hope Audubon Center is the headquarter for the North Carolina Chapter of the Audubon Society and a hub for bird watchers and nature lovers of all demographics.
Exploration of my design began with the term "superimpose." This word was perfect for this site, as the terrain of the site was very hilly, and flattening out the site to impose the structure directly on the ground would have too much impact on the existing ecosystem. Therefore, the programs are lifted and superimposed over the ground on stilts, allowing the natural hilly terrain to flow under undisturbed.
Collages are prime examples of superimposition and architecture. Various elements come together to form a whole, with the integrity of the elements being layered over being sustained. Each Volume of program is clad with different materials with varying textures to essentially create a collage in the forest.
