[Fall 2020 Studio Project]
The Prairie Island, located in Durham, NC, is a patch of land maintained by the Extra Terrestrial Projects to promote native biodiversity.
The client wanted a new shed that could store gardening equipment, and at the same time serve as a place for volunteers and people walking on the American Tobacco Trail to rest and interact with the prairie.
The new shed serves as a gateway/threshold that draw passersby from the American Tobacco Trail into the prairie. The gateway itself offers shade and a place to rest or socialize. The clustered cubes are inspired by the modular nature of flowers and pods of native plant species found on the prairie.
