[Spring 2020 Studio Project]
The project is located in the Historic Downtown Charlottesville Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia. Majority of the spaces in the Charlottesville mall are not truly public; they are pay to stay spaces. Not only that, but designs of the buildings themselves have a context of Charlottesville's racially oppressive past.
The Charlottesville Center for Education is a place open for people of all demographics, where they can study, learn, or simply socialize. It houses programs such as a library, study spaces, and a classroom. The stacked L plan allows the ground level to connect with the existing public space across the street, as well as the creation of an atrium-courtyard that promotes openness to the surrounding street and among the programs.
